Built by Scarborough's community and made entirely of recycled and repurposed materials, Grue returned for December 2022! The fantastical world was created from positive energy and discarded paper; a wandering cardboard labyrinth of rooms to explore and wonders to discover. However, much like our world, Grue became cluttered and clogged with rubbish.
3 - 23 December 2022
Old Parcels Office Art Space, Scarborough
With the help of our audience to examine this strange place, we discovered new ways to help the fragile land. Working alongside an unexpected investigator, who joined our journey we found out where the music was coming from in the distant mountains. We invited our visitors to collaborate with each other, seeing the impact we can have on the environment we live in - both in and outside of Grue.
Grue 2020 Install Timelapse
Have you ever wondered how we made Grue in 2022 at the Old Parcels Office Scarborough?
This timelapse shows Steve Wintercroft, the GRUE and ARCADE team assembling GRUE 2022's cardboard world over 5 days.
Grue wouldn’t have happened in 2022 without the hard work and generosity of the 450+ people who came to workshops, designed audio, covered walls, made plants, wired things together, glued, cut, joined, acted, produced, ran and made sure everyone had hot tea. Grue 2022 would also be impossible without the amazing artistry of Steve Wintercroft and his team.
Steve Wintercroft leads an environmentally conscious design company specialising in helping people make Masks from waste card.
He’s published seven papercraft books and worked on projects for Damien Hirst, Sir Paul McCartney, Björk and Game of Thrones.
Funded through public funding from the National Lottery by Arts Council England & Yorkshire Coast BID. Supported by GF Smith and Old Parcels Office Arts Space.
