Community Build Workshops
NOVEMBER 2021

Community members got involved in the project by attending building sessions - creative, relaxed and fun workshops. Here they built cardboard houses, trees and walls which all became part of the final experience. Templates and advice were provided by world-class artist Steve Wintercroft, so no experience was necessary.

Volunteers joined in the workshops across four dates in November 2021. The drop-in Community Build Days at The Old Parcels Art Centre, a wheelchair accessible venue with an accessible toilet.

The build days were suitable for the whole family and it was possible for the community to get involved from home too, using three different A4 templates provided by artist Steve Wintercroft.  Once the cardboard creations were complete volunteers were asked to drop them off at The Old Parcels Office Arts Space during one of ARCADE’s build sessions. These can be found below – feel free to keep the magic of Grue alive by creating your own cardboard build now!

A magical, immersive experience

4 - 21 DECEMBER 2021

Grue was designed to be as accessible as possible, with a ‘Pay What You Can’ entrance fee, and a wheelchair accessible venue. The experience was designed to be intimate, with only 6 people booked per slot. With plenty to marvel at and discover, visitors were also given the opportunity to make their own decoration at the end of the experience, cuppa in hand.

Built by the community and made entirely out of recycled and repurposed materials, the 20-minute final walkthrough experience delivered a clear message about what is possible with a bit of imagination and your leftover Christmas packaging.

Grue by Wintercroft, produced by ARCADE, commissioned by the Old Parcels Office Arts Centre Scarborough, funded by Yorkshire Coast BID and supported by Invisible Dust.
